Our Watermelons Made a Comeback!

5:26 PM
After a brutually warm summer (most people I know's garden didn't do well, just because the heat was so bad).  Well, now we've had a reprieve...a bit.  We've had some cooler weather and some rain & here we go.  Our watermelons have made a remarkable comeback!  Take a look at this watermelon, just picked from the garden :-)

Patty-Pans!

9:34 PM

I know, I know...patty pans are not the only thing on the plate but....we have Patty-Pans!  And yellow (summer) squash and zucchini.  Hoorah!  I'm sorry.  I know that you're probably thinking that the excitement isn't that necessary...but it is!  Trust me, when you've had a whole summer of this kind of stuff galore and then all of a sudden you don't and you go to the store and you're paying like $2-3 bucks just for a couple squash..you'd be jumping up and down too.

Happy Summer :-)

Amazing Garden!

11:04 AM
I haven't actually been "out" to the garden awhile...I mean.  I see it everyday but for the first time in a while, today, I actually went out and took a walk through it.  I was taken aback at how amazing it looked :-)
This is the middle of our four-way walk way:
Here you can see the potatoes, the onions, and the corn in the background.
Also, right next to the onions, just to the right of them are the yellow turnips.
Here are the potatoes up close:

Check out our onions!

9:46 PM
Here are a few of our onions that we started to go to seed.  Check out the size of these babies!
Here's one of the little flowers (about to bud on the end) from the seed
stock.  You can see here that it's just starting to go to seed.

So here's what the big deal is all about...just less than three months ago this is what these onions "used to" look like:

Here they are just planted (Feb. 2011)

Garden Variety

12:04 PM
There's so much going on in the garden, and so much to keep up with...in a good way though.  These are the veggies that we've got growing up on our top window sill.  We started these plants a while back.  I believe if you look in the back right of the pic, you'll see our dill.

The other thing that we've got going on (which we have now moved to the sunroom-and have been transplanted) are the artichokes. There were all together in one small container until Papa, transplanted them and moved them to their own little pots.  Neat, huh?

Our Eggs

8:51 AM
We hardly ever get an egg that is as speckled as this one (front right) They're usually either a solid brown or solid white.  There's not usually one that's speckled.  I thought that this one was so cute and worth posting :-)

Precious Little Bird Eggs

7:20 PM
Here is what new life looks like in our bird nest back behind our house.  A mama bird has made this nest her home for her newly laid three little speckled eggs.  I tried to grab these picks this evening before she returned...

 Aww....

The pea fences were put up

8:11 PM
...And the lettuces where planted.
If you'll look just to the right side here, the far right row, you will see the pea fences that were put up.

Now what you can't see is the really neat netting that Papa put in between each of these rows,
where the wood posts are.
Perfectly spaced.
And looking good. ;-)
Papa went out and planted the peas the next day, Sunday, March 27th and the day after that, Monday,
March 28th, 2011.

Triple Duty-Egg Tracker

4:15 PM
Here are the eggs for today. I guess that we've missed getting the eggs for a few days now.  Papa went out to get the eggs today and about two hours ago there were only seven of them (six brown and one white) and now there were three more eggs (two brown and one white).  Those last three would be today's eggs.  Looks like we haven't went out and gotten them since Thursday...whooops!

Planting Potatoes

6:20 PM
Potatoes, potatoes, and more potatoes.  We are going to be some happy folk when it comes time to harvest these taters.  Take a look at the variety that we're planting out today.  This years potatoes were planted today, Sunday, March 20, 2011.
